Al Devens

(American, 1926 - 1984)

Al Devens was born in California in 1926, and spent his childhood in San Luis Obispo. As a sensitive boy, he discovered a deep feeling for natural beauty and was noticed for his artistic talents. His observations of nature continued throughout his youth. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he attended the University of California at Berkeley and graduated with a Bachelors Degree. His deep sensitivity and love of people and God inspired him to enter San Francisco Theological Seminary, graduating in 1956. For a number of years he served as an ordained minister. In religion, Al Devens found peace but intensively continued his study of art. Driven by an invisible force he desired to create, he requested a year’s leave of absence from the church. His recognition as an artist was established very quickly. His study and love for nature continued and he moved his studio from Contra Costa County to the foothills near Yosemite Park. The intense study and knowledge of the subject matter is obvious in all of his works. He periodically traveled from the coastline to the mountains in search of beauty, and makes many sketches before a painting is even started. His style is very unique, showing softness, and feeling of peace.

He was asked by a television station to perform his technique in front of a large television audience, which he gladly accepted. Due to tremendous response he has demonstrated again and again.

Al Devens works can be found in homes throughout the United States, and in more than fifteen countries worldwide making him internationally well known and admired.
