Fernand Pinal
French (1881-1958)
Born in 1881 at Bruyeres-et-Montberault a small village in the heart of
Aisne department. His taste for drawing started at a very early age. As a child he
discovered the landscapes of River Marne and Orxois. His father was a civil servant and
was posted successively to Gandelu, Charly Sur Marne and Meaux, which was his last
assignment. Fernand Pinal was an only child and to please his father he became a senior
civil servant. While having this job he was also painting and engraving.
He became an illustrator of poetic and musical reviews. He was a
Violinist and Cello player and played in an orchestra. He had a wide range of activities
like speaker, poet, comedian, art critic, restorer of paintings, etc
He also enjoyed
cooking and was quite a gourmet but his favorite things to do were painting and engraving.
Pinal was the friend of many painters such as Eugene Buland, Gustave
Valerian, and Le Sidaner. He managed to study Law in Paris. The 1st of August
1914 he was drafted into the army but was sent back to Laon because of his small size and
his bad vision. In the army his job was telephone controller. After the first battle of la
Marne every time he received furlough he went to the Marne valley between Lagny and Meaux
to paint. There were many ruins in the valley and that was his subject for the time. The
critic of the day named him "the painter of the devastated region".
He was a member of: le Salon des Artistes fraucais,la Societe Nationale
des Beaux-Arts du Salon dHiver, du comite des aquafortistes francais, etc
Pinal was faithful to his beloved country ,he died October 12 1958 in
his workshop at Romeny-sur-Marne.
