Peter was born in February 1951, of an English mother and Estonian father. He started his working life as a toolmaker, and designer of aluminum extrusion dies, and began to paint in 1979. Entirely self-taught, he turned professional in 1983.

Peter has an absolute love of oil painting and especially admires the masters of Dutch Painting of the 17^th century, which is reflected in his own work. Since 1995, after seeing the work of Estonian artist Olav Maran, a modern painter who painted in a traditional style, Peter decided to review his own work, and started researching "Still Life" painters such as Willem Kalf and De Heem.

After experimenting with priming his own panels and canvases with different colors, and painting with thick and thin paint and glazing on top, in the way of the old masters, he has developed a style with detail and atmosphere that is essential in his portrayal of fine wines, whiskey, port, fruit and cheeses, etc. A way of painting in this modern world that has become outdated to some, but will give joy and pleasure to those that can see and admire the traditional skill and technique involved in making these original paintings.

Peter Kotkas’ originals are in private collections all over the world, with some noted collectors. In addition his images have been reproduced on greeting cards, collectors plates and Ltd. Edition giclee prints.

Peter also gives lectures and demonstrations on oil painting techniques in the style of the masters, and teaches at two art groups. He also copies originals for various clients through out the world, in various styles.
